More than 100 Wave Riders already registered as Earthwave returns for the final weekend of October half-term
Newquay, Cornwall — 1 October 2026
Earthwave Newquay has officially confirmed that its rescheduled mass-participation surfing event will take place on Saturday 31 October 2026 at Great Western Beach.
Following the postponement of the original September event, organisers have spent the additional time working through the final water-safety requirements and approval process, which had taken longer than originally anticipated.
The event will now return on the final weekend of the October half-term, with activities beginning from 10am and building towards the main Earthwave mass-participation Wave between approximately 3pm and 4pm.
More than 100 Wave Riders are already registered to take part!
Earthwave founder Dene Botha said:
“We said when we postponed in September that this wasn't a cancellation — it was unfinished business — and we're incredibly excited to now have 31 October confirmed.
“Postponing was a difficult decision, but safety had to come first and we knew it was the right thing to do. The support we've received since then from our Wave Riders, local businesses, partners, the council, media and the wider Newquay community has been quite overwhelming.
“Now we've got the opportunity to finish what we started — and hopefully make it even bigger in the process.”
STRENGTHENED WATER-SAFETY OPERATION
As part of preparations for the rescheduled event, ERA Adventures and Lifeguard Training has joined Earthwave to manage the event's dedicated water-safety operation.
The team brings professional lifeguarding, water-safety and adventure activity experience to Earthwave and will oversee the safety operation surrounding the mass participation element of the event.
Botha added:
“We're thrilled to have ERA Adventures and Lifeguard Training on board. Managing more than 100 people entering the water together requires a significant operation behind the scenes, and having an experienced local team leading that side of the event gives us enormous confidence heading into 31 October.”
A FULL DAY FOR NEWQUAY
Earthwave is about considerably more than the main Wave, with organisers creating a full programme for surfers, families, children and spectators at Great Western Beach.
Activities begin from 10am and will include the Northshore Softboard Surf-Off for under-16s, START & CO Dig for Gold, a sand art demonstration and competition with Beach Art Crew Cornwall, live music, food and drink, beach activities and partner activations.
Wave Riders will begin assembling from approximately 2:15pm ahead of the official welcome and compulsory safety briefing, with the main Earthwave attempt scheduled for approximately 3pm–4pm.
The event will then continue with the Earthwave Finale at Steam at the Great Western Hotel, including results, awards, prizes, music, food and a post-event celebration.
A COMMUNITY EFFORT
The rescheduled Earthwave has the backing of Newquay BID and Love Newquay and the endorsement of Mayor of Newquay Cllr Drew Creek.
Great Western Beach will host the event, with support from ERA Adventures and Lifeguard Training, Newquay Boardriders, The Wave Project, Shaka Studios, Earniversity and a growing group of local businesses and community partners.
The event deliberately coincides with the final weekend of the October half-term, following Newquay's Zombie Crawl on Saturday 24 October and helping to bookend a week of activity in the town.
“We want this to be something Newquay can really get behind,” Botha said.
“You don't need to be a surfer to come down and be part of it. Bring the kids, watch the Wave, get involved in the activities, support the local businesses and enjoy the day.
“At its heart, Earthwave is about bringing people together around the beach, the ocean and the community we're lucky enough to have here in Newquay.”
CALLING ALL WAVE RIDERS
More than 100 surfers are already registered, with Earthwave now calling on individuals, families, surf clubs, schools, businesses and groups of friends to help grow the Wave even further.
Entry to participate in the main Wave is £10, with softboards compulsory for all Wave Riders. Limited board hire will also be available.
Existing tickets purchased for the original September date automatically remain valid for 31 October. Anyone unable to attend the rescheduled date is entitled to a full refund.
Spectators and families can attend the wider beach event and support the Wave Riders throughout the day.
Earthwave Newquay takes place on Saturday 31 October 2026 at Great Western Beach, with activities beginning from 10am and the main Wave scheduled for approximately 3pm–4pm.
