Earthwave Newquay is already building momentum towards its rescheduled October half-term event, following the decision this week to postpone the inaugural mass-participation surfing event at Great Western Beach.
And the response since the announcement has been overwhelmingly positive.
Earthwave had already attracted more than 110 registered Wave Riders before the postponement. Since announcing the decision, a further 10 tickets have been sold, while only four registered participants have requested refunds.
Organisers have also received an outpouring of support from event partners, local organisations, media, the council and members of the Newquay community — reinforcing the decision to give the event the additional time needed to complete its final water-safety requirements and deliver the Wave properly.
The remaining water-safety requirements and approval needed for a mass-participation Wave of this scale had taken longer to complete than originally anticipated.
Rather than compromise participant safety or significantly reduce the event this weekend, Earthwave made the decision to postpone until the October half-term.
Earthwave founder Dene Botha said:
“The response over the last 24 hours has been incredible.
“Postponing an event that more than 110 people had already signed up for was never a decision we were going to take lightly. But safety has to come first, and we knew that if we couldn't deliver the Wave properly this weekend, the right thing to do was give ourselves the time to get everything in place.
“What’s happened since has given us even more confidence in that decision. We’ve sold another 10 tickets since announcing the postponement, only four people have asked for refunds, and the support we’ve received from our partners, the council, media and the local community has been overwhelming.
“People haven't walked away from Earthwave — quite the opposite. They're telling us to get it done.
“So that's exactly what we're going to do. We've got a few more weeks, an incredible community behind us and some unfinished business. We're excited to deliver on what we promised. Game on.”
More time. More riders. A bigger opportunity.
Earthwave is now working towards a new date during the October half-term, with discussions underway with Great Western Beach, the water-safety team and other key stakeholders.
The additional time will be used first and foremost to complete the water-safety requirements and approval process, while also giving organisers an opportunity to strengthen the wider event.
With participation continuing to grow even after the postponement, Earthwave will use the extended campaign to attract more Wave Riders, increase local and national awareness, create further opportunities for its partners and continue building the community around the event.
The ambition remains unchanged: bring as many surfers as possible together in Newquay to Ride the Wave.
Existing tickets remain valid — and registrations remain open
All existing Wave Rider tickets remain valid for the rescheduled event.
Anyone unable to attend the new date once announced will be entitled to a full refund.
For everyone else, their place on the Wave remains secured — and new Wave Riders can continue to join the growing line-up.
The new Earthwave Newquay date will be announced as soon as final arrangements are confirmed.
120+ Wave Riders and growing.
October half-term.
Unfinished business. Game on. 🌊
